Building Winners

If you're a basketball coach, Gregg Popovich's presentation at a FIBA clinic might be the best 33 minutes on the internet.

Coach Pop presented his philosophy and methods for building a basketball team. His concern for his players and how it plays out in daily accountability was outstanding. Even on the highest level of coaching, and overseeing millionaire once-in-a-lifetime athletes, using the game to build more than basketball players works. Here's what really stood out to me and in a much smaller way has rung true to my experience leading others...

CHARACTER: A coach can get a good idea on the character of an individual by observing the following:
- how does a player react to a teammate during mistakes, struggles, and frustrations?
- how does a player react to success? Do they act they found the cure for cancer over the simplest of success?
- how does a player react to failure? Do they self-loathe, blame teammates, or disengage?
- Do they allow themselves to be coached?

MOTIVATION: put enough strong character individuals together and motivation takes care of itself (this was a genius thought)

ASSESSING YOUR TEAM, OPPONENTS, & TALENT: be open to ideas from any source or perspective. Coach Popovich has demonstrated this by hiring the first female assistant coach, and multiple European coaches.

LEADERSHIP; There will be many styles of leadership, but the result of leadership is the same: influence and accountability.

GOALS: Set goals carefully. The most important thing a leader can do is embrace the journey and never skip a step while pursuing goals. It is the journey and refusal to skip steps that gives a group confidence when it's time to accomplish the goal (win game, or a championship)
