FAUX TEAMMATE: 5 ways to know if you are one

Faux. Have you ever heard the word? It means attempting to make the inauthentic appear authentic . The first time I came across the word was during a home improvement project. A faux wall was part of the renovation. The wall would look real but be functionally useless. You couldn't hang shelves, support a beam on it, or do much else with it. The faux wall is good-looking but cannot be relied on. A clip recently surfaced of a famous professional athlete sulking in the locker room after his team had won a championship. The athlete suffered a season-ending injury just before the playoffs began, yet the team won the championship primarily because of the play of the injured player's backup. It was curious that the player's promising career seemed to stall out after that injury despite a full recovery. Remember to be RESPONSIBLE. Responsibility. It's one of the many things in life that is simple, but not easy. It is a character-trait that can be very difficult to explain because it has so many different applications. Responsibility also seems to be when of the first things that goes right out the window when life's circumstances begin to overwhelm us. Our character begins to crack under the pressure of a challenger or failure, and we begin to make excuses for why we can't do this or won't do that. Before we know it, not only have we failed to rise above our circumstances we have actually been swallowed up by them. I spent 16 years as an athletic director. During that time, I provided countless support and guidance to coaches on how to deal with parents. The issue most likely to cause a conflict between a parent and a coach was playing time. Occasionally, one of my coaches could not satisfy a frustrated parent over their child's playing time, so I would have to intervene. My best attempts were utilizing a checking account analogy. Coaches are pragmatists specializing in outcomes. They decide on playing time-based on how much value a player contributes versus how much their efforts detract from the team's efforts to win. If they make too many mistakes and don't make enough contributions, they overdraw their value-added checking account and lose playing time. It was rare to satisfy parent concerns regarding playing time because every parent believes their child should be playing more.
