Mastering the Paradox of Team

I wasn't a Coach Calipari fan (I didn't dislike him either), but then I read his book 'Players First' a few years ago. I took away so many insightful ideas on galvanizing people together. Coach Cal is now a national champion and hall-of-famer with an army of fiercely loyal alum. Over the past decade, most of those alum only played for him for one season. It's a special skill set to get a group of individuals to all aim for the same thing in the same way.

Coach Cal has become an expert at convincing a group of aspiring teenage millionaires that the fastest ways to get what they want is to put the program first. He's leveraged the 'one and done' age for the maximum benefit of the boys he leads. Does it benefit him? Absolutely. But here's the kicker, he still had to go 'all in' for them before it would benefit him. From a distance, I'm pretty sure Coach Cal couldn't convince these kids (and their families) to sell out to UK if he wasn't sold out to his players. Coach Cal has mastered the selling of the Paradox of Team: It Must Be Just About Us. He's probably doing a solid job of modeling it too.
