KPI stands for Key Performance Indicator. It is a data point that companies use to measure their effectiveness. Maybe, but what if leaders focused more on how their behaviors influence their people, like KPEs - Keeping People Excited?
To keep their people excited for the work, leaders should do the following:
Keep their people educated - in the knowledge economy, information is valuable. Educate your team about everything related to the work. Maya Angelou once said, "Do the best you can. And when you know a little better, do a little better." Helping your team know more will empower them to do great work.
Keep their people engaged - leaders must convince people that their work matters. Call out to your team the specific way their small work is making a big difference. As a varsity basketball coach, I used to remind my players that boring drills matter when you have a big vision!
Keep their people engrossed - to engross is to have one’s full attention absorbed. Share what you are learning about the work and ask your team what they are learning about their work. Help people become engrossed by demonstrating how engrossed you are in the work.
Keep their people encouraged - encourage your team by telling stories about the impact of their work, clarifying goals and roles, complimenting when these are met, and consoling team members when things go wrong.
KPIs matter, but KPEs matter a little more. Lead on, friends!
