The Hard Way Makes Life Easy

Coach Don Meyer passed away in May 2014, and the coaching world quietly lost a giant. Coach Meyer held the record for most wins in a college basketball career until it was broken by Coach K of Duke University in 2011. Why did so few people in the general public know who Coach Don Meyer was? Coach Meyer shunned opportunities to go to higher profile programs because he wanted to be able to ‘teach life’ to his basketball players. Coach Meyer was a believer in Christ and held an educational doctorate. He believed that basketball was a tool to be used to mold young men. You can read more about Coach Meyer here. Below is a great poem Coach Meyer wrote demonstrating his perspectives on life.

So much of our life is spent pursuing ease and comfort. Matthew 7:14 states the path to true life is narrow and hard. Coach Meyer understood the practical and spiritual application of this verse.A great reminder to you when life gets hard.

THE EASY AND THE HARD

Sarcasm is easy.  Sincerity is hard.

Reaction is easy.  Action is hard.

Following is easy.  Leading is hard.

Losing is easy.  Winning is hard.

Talking is easy.  Listening is hard.

Flab is easy.  Muscle is hard.

Lying is easy.  Truth is hard.

Sleeping is easy.  Waking is hard.

Falling is easy.  Getting up is hard.

Criticizing is easy.  Taking criticism is hard.

Letting go is easy.  Hanging on is hard.

Pride is easy.  Humility is hard.

Thoughtless is easy.  Thoughtful is hard.

Dumb is easy.  Smart is hard.

Cowardice is easy.  Courage is hard.

What is easy makes life hard, and what is hard makes life easy.

– Don Meyer

Matthew 7:14 ‘But small is the gate and narrow is the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.’

Keep on, keepin' on, friends.
